The race to be the leading goalscorer in the Premier League this season looks wide open with three players quoted between 4/1 and 5/1 with Betfred.
Over the last 10 seasons the leading scorer has scored more than 20 goals in a 38-match campaign. Injuries can be key and a player must appear in most of those matches to outscore his rivals.
Harry Kane, Obvious Selection
Harry Kane is the obvious selection but at the time of writing a proposed move to Manchester City has not been completed. The England striker looks like leaving Tottenham and was not part of the squad at the start of this season due to injury.
Kane certainly has the track record but will have to hit the ground running and have no major injuries to score most goals in the Premier League during the 2021/22 season.
His Premier League record of 166 goals in 242 appearances over the last eight seasons gives him the highest goals per game average of the leading contenders.
However, he averages 30 matches in the league out of a possible 38 which leaves him with no margin for error in competition with Romelu Lukaku and Mo Salah.

Romelu Lukaku, Despite Chelsea
Lukaku has returned to Chelsea where he will be looking to significantly add to his Premier league tally of 193 goals in 397 matches. That strike rate puts him behind Kane but has missed just 23 matches in his last seven full seasons in the Premier League.
However, Chelsea were the lowest scorers of the top seven teams in the Premier league last season. No players scored more than seven times which suggests Lukaku may struggle to find the net at sufficient regular intervals to be the top scorer in the league.
Bruno Fernandes started the season with a hat-trick for Manchester United and rarely misses his team’s penalties. He has scored 29 goals in 52 fixtures with Manchester United but is unproven as a regular scorer over a number of seasons.

Mo Salah, On Top
That leaves the most likely top scorer this season, based on pedigree and his recent scoring records. Salah has scored 95 goals in 145 appearances for Liverpool over the last four seasons.
Significantly, he has played in all but seven matches from 2017-18 to 2020-21 which is virtually a full quota. That record cannot be ignored so Salah is the player to back as the 7/2 favourite with William Hill to be the top marksman in the Premier League this season.
